AN HEROIC BRAKESMAN

The King has awarded the Albert ■medal, cf the second class to James Carter, a brakesman of the Canadian Pacific Railway, for' gallantry in saving the life of a little girl. * Carter was on the engine of a train which was travelling at considerable SP eecl. • .Vhsn rounding a curve he saw the ca-iid trying to cross the line 200 ft ahead. He shouted to the driver to stop, and ran along the footboard to the "pilot" on the front of the engine. Realising that the train, which had s.owed down to about eight miles an hour, could not be stopped in time, he jumped from the engine, and; rushing ten ward, just succeeded in rescuing the child, falling with her into the ditch at the side of the line. The train was stopped when the engine and eight coaches had passed the spot, where the child was rescued
