Thf> Vienna Zeitung has published the F^peror Franz Josef's letter to the t»\i*:y*?, in which he says: "Our ally <T +aly) has committed perfidy the like of which history has not known. After thirty years, during which 6he ias been able to increase her territorial possessions and develop herself to an nnthought of extent, Italy has o abandoned us in our danger and gone flying into our enemies' camp. We have always loyally responded *t-o the duties of our alliance and afforded her our * protection when she took the field. We did more: ."When-Italy directed covfct«w glances across our frontier we re«olved on a great principle of sacrifice, which particularly grieved «ur paternal heart, but Italy's covetousness could not be appeased, so her fate saust be accomplished. ' My armies, which victoriously withstood* the mighty enemy in the north in a gigantic conflict, and the trencherous enemy in the south is no new enemy. The grea,t memories of Noveca, Mortaro Custozza «tnd Lissa, which constituted the pride of my youth, and the spirt of Radetzky, the Archduke Albreeht and Togetthoff, which continue to live in my land and sea forces, guarantee that we 6hall successfully defend the frontiers of tb<» monarchy. I salute my battle-tried troops and rely on them, their leaders, and my people, to whose unexampled spirit and sacrifice my inmost paternal thanks are due, and I pray the Almighty will bless our colors and take our just cause under His protection."
