A TRIBUTE TO THEIR SERVICES^

A campaign to raise funds tor the .equipment oi the hospital ship was in- \ augurated at a public meeting on Sat- * '..- urday night, when there were scenes of great enthusiasm. - The Governor and the Countess of Liverpool were present, and the Governor, in a stirring speech, explained the purposes of the fund and :'* expressed his belief that the people of - the Dominion in this matter, which '* affected almost all.of them personally^- '■ would give another notable example of their generosity and patriotism. Jn speaking,of the influence of the war on Imperial sentiment, His Excellency declared that the result of the struggle !i:; 1; would be to bind the Empire together' -"'" in indissoluble bonds. He was cheered to the echo. Over £1000 was subscribed at the meeting, and the New Zealand Herald fund, opened on Friday morning, already carries over twelve hundred pounds. WELLINGTON, May 23. A memorial service in honor of.the New Zealanders killed at the Dardanelles was held in the Newtown Park under the auspices of the New Zealand Patriotic Society yesterday. There was ! an audience of '10,000 citizens and 3000 territorials. The service was conducted by Chaplain-Major D. C Bates and Chaplain-Captain J. G. Chapman The Rev. Archibald E. Hunt, whose son has been wounded in Turkey, delivered an inspiriting address, calling for more men.
More men was also the keynote of ,< the address of the Rt. Hon. W. F-.Maß-sey. He was proud, he said, that Ne^ Zealand was doing her part in th« gigantic struggle, and he paid a tribute to the silent work of the mothers and wives, who were making big sacrifices. Men were needed to take the place of those who had fallen and were falling so-gloriously at the Dardanelles. The Dominion would always do its part till Britain had concluded peace with honor. . -
WESTPORT, May 23. This afternoon a'largely-attended intercessory service was held in Victoria Square. A stirring address was delivered by the Rev. Mr Coursey (Anglican).
