iOSS OF BLOOD CAUSES DEATH
SIMPLE AND IMPRESSIVE
FUNERAL.
(Received May 22, 12.30 p.m.)
MELBOURNE May 22. General Godlev has cabled his division's sympathy in the irreparable loss hy death of General Bridges.
LONDON, May 21. It appears that General Bridges was shot in the upper part of the leg when visiting trenches on the hills at Sari Bair, probably by a sniper. A doctor near by immediately attended to his ■wounds, the most severe of which were bleeding profusely. First aid was rendered, and he was carried to the t>each. where he was again carefully attended to. If was realised that "there would be ■serious difficulty in stopping the bleeding, and General Bridges was placed on a hospital .shio sand everything possible done" but'the ■doctors were unable to .stem the bleeding, and growing weaker, the General passed p.woy quietly before reaching Alexandria, with his aide-de-camp, "Foster, who wns sliehtly wounded, by Ibis bedside. The ship arrived yesterday morning. The funeral in the afternoon was most impressive, owing 'to. the quidmde ■of the surroundings and the simplicity •of the ceremony. The coffin was shouldered by Australians, and was followed by General Maxwell, four other generals, Lord Dudley, many officers, and about sixty men. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery, and when the Last Post was sounded Ithere was hardly one dry eye.
