BOARD OF EDUCATION.

At the usual meeting of the Wanganui Board of Education on Wednesday there were present: Messrs F. Pirani, E. Dixon, T. A. Harris, W. Bruce, P. ODea, G. H. Bennett, A. Fraser, and D. H. Guthrie.

THE STAFF

Resignation—The resignation of M. E. Field, assistant, Ohangai, was accepted. Appointments—The following appointments were approved: Mokoia, assistant, Miss E. O'Brien; Eltham, special assistant, Mr H. Clem-ance. Leave of Absence —Applications for leave of absence were granted as follows: B. Cavell, assistant, Hurleyville, illness; M. E. Pinny, pupilteacher, Hawera, illness; C. L. Gibbs, assistant, Auroa, illness; W. R. Bates, assistant, Hawera, illness; B. C. MacClure, assistant, Mangatoki, illness; C Lavery, assistant, Hawera, illness. Holidays—The Department intimated that beyond granting a holiday on Empire Day and King's Birthday no ceremonial display should be carried out.—Received.

Conference —The .North Canterbury Education Board wrote suggesting a conference of members of education boards to be held at Wellington during next session of Parliament to discuss the Education Act. —Suggestion agreed to.

APPLICATION FOR GRANTS

Applications for grants for repairs, etc., were received from various committees and dealt with as below:

•Okaiawa—£l4 6s 7d was granted to the committee to complete payment for drainage works. Matapu —The committee's application far increased grant for repairs, from £8 2s 6tl to £14 2s 4d 3 was granted.

Okaiawa —A resolution was received from the Okaiawa householders asking for a new school. Held over until after the boundaries of the new boards were fixed.

Maii'jjntoki—The committee compla4nod of reduction in the number of the committe from seven to five. The Board stated that, it had no objection to the committee increasing its membership to seven. Scholarships—Two applications were received for transfers o£ scholarships, from W. MeNiclde from Palmerston to Auckland, and Walton from Wanganui to Haweia. The applications were granted.

Winter Holidays—Linton and Apiti Committees applied to take their wint<w holidays two weeks earlier, so as to embrace the Palmerston North Winter Show. The applications were , granted. '
