FALSE PRETENCES.

(Received March 17, 2. p.m.) SYDNEY, March 17. Wm. Evans was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for false pretences. It appears that Evans, while wearing a British officer's uniform, with two rows of ribbons, obtained a cheque book and gave a valueless cheque. The accused claimed that he was entitled to wear thp uniform. The Magistrate said the uniform w%is worn in order to inspire confidence and rob the. public.
