Mr Gibbs, a war correspondent, states that;.the accuracy and rapidity of the German gunners was particularly remarkable at Soissons. The artillery was assisted by aviators, who drop scraps of paper and bombs which act as smoke signals. In one case on Friday an 11-inch, igun dropped a shell close to the British headquarters, aad several of the staff had a narrow escape: The headquarters were immediately shifted, and within half an hour fifty shells dropped on the same spot.
A Lille newspaper states that King Albert" of the Belgians had a narrow escape during an tour of inspection. His chauffeur mafle towards the German lines, '.and* though, the King order-, ed him to stop 3ie continued at full speed, and King Albert shot him. A document was found, in the chauffeur's pocket offering a million francs for the King.
The German cruiser Emden sank the Clan Matheson in the Bay of Bengal.
The crew were landed at Rangoon.
"Whenever the French artillery became aggressive the Germans shelled the cathedral. It is estimated that between, three and five hundred civilians perished.
The French left has been reinforced by heavier guns capable <|>f reaching the huge German, ordnance, and these are now searching the enemy's trenches, paralysing the German artillery's effect.
A large number of civilians in the .Metz district are burying the dead. A thousand bodies were French and English, and three thousand Germane.
