RUSSIA'S REQUIREMENTS FOR A

The Admiralty return of the naval expenditure for the current year shows that Britain spent fifty-two millions, Germany twenty-three, millions, France twenty-five, Russia twenty-isix, Italy ten, Japan ten, Austria seven, and America thirty-two millions. The personnel of the Entente navies numbers 280,000, and of Germany' and Austria 102,000.

The next English wheat crop is estimated to fetch an average of 40s.

A brave tobacconist of Senlis, exasperated by the insolence of the invaders, declared, "I will serve men not bullies." He was hurled to his knees. His wife rushed out shrieking formercy, but both were shot. The townspeople were infuriated and fired on the soldiers, and the guns were turned upon the town, killing men, women, and children. From the shattered houses people ran wounded and terrified, but the horrible bombardment continued till the town wa<3 wrecked. Within an hour a force of Turcos arrived and pursued and punished the barbarians.

Paris is becoming restless at the delay of the Government in returning from Bordeaux.

The Petrograd press says that Russia is in no mood to accept a settlemen which does not guarantee the future inability of Germany to disturb the peace of Europe. Guaiantees must he given that will enable Belgium independently to defend her integrity against Germany. Russia does riot require German territory.

The Grand Duchess Olga, sister to the Czar, joined the Red Cross, concealing her identity. An officer recognising her requested permission to kiss her hand. The Grand Duchess Olga placed her finger to his lips, and commanded him to address her simply as a sister.
