One of the resolutions of the last Dominion Conference of the Farmers' Union was that all auctioneers' and hotel license fees should be paid to Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards. Replying to that recommendation, the Minister of Justice says: "By the Licensing Act, 1908, it is provided that all fees paid in respect of licensed houses shall be paid to the local atuhority within whose district the premises in respect of which the license was granted are situated, and shall form part of the local authority's ordinary fund. It is not proposed to make any alteration of the law in this direction T n

A nillustration of . the method of wholesalers in regard to retailing produce on the London market was given by Major Norton in his address at Palnierston (says the Standard). When visiting Bolton, in England, he enquired of one grocer why he did not stock Australian butter. The retailer remarked that he had on a previous occasion done so and disposed of twenty boxes weekly. The first consignment had been sold and was absolutely good. But when the next twenty boxes arrived- half was good and half was not so good. The grocer had said to Major Norton: w'lf you can't keep the quality up to a regular standard it's no good my stocking it, and I had to discontinue it." Major Norton was not satisfied and made enquiries of the wholesale house in. London from which the butter had been sold. He found that the firm had kept 1000 boxes in store against a rise that did not materialise. When the butter was sold it had been too long in store, and the Bolton grocer received part of the deteriorated butter. Then he complained of the irregularity on the part of the exporter to whom he attributed the poorer quality!

In answer to a complaint made at the recent conference of, the Farmers' Union,.that the burning of grass along railway lines endangered private property close to the tracks, representations on the subject having been made to the Railway Department, the Minister has sent the following reply:—"l have the honour to inform you that in order to clear the lines efficiently it is necessary that the burning off of the grass should be undertaken in dry weather, but the staff have instructions to take every care to prevent the spread of fire to the adjoining properties. The few instances in which serij ous damage, has been done- as the result |of the operations of the Department's gangs when burning off grass show 1 , clearly that as a general rule proper caa-e is exercised. Yoxi will recognise that there is always some element of danger of fires occurring on properties adjoining the railway lines, but the advantages that accrue to the landowners by reason of their proximity to tVo railway far outweigh any disadvantages."
