Mr. A. W. Gillies, formerly Mayor of Hawera., is visiting the town.
Mr. F. S. Canning, who has been confined to his house for nearly three months through indisposition, has recovered sufficiently to be able to go away for a change. He left, with Mrs. Canning, this morning for Rotor ua and Whakatane.
Mr. J. Foreman., who has been on the locomotive staff of the railways in Hawera for a number of years, has been promoted to take charge at Ohakune, and will leave to-morrow for his rew position.
Mr. Wm. Innis, an old resident of Okato, died at New Plymouth hospital on Sunday evening. Mr. Innis, who was 84 years of age, had been in the hospital only a few days. He had been a resident of Okato for the past 50 years.
A press message states that Dean Stephen, of Melbourne, has been consecrated as Bishop of Tasmania.
Out of twenty-six applicants for the position of engineer at a- salary of £1000 per annum, the Westport Harbour Board has appointed Mr. C. N. Bouit, of Mackay, Queensland (says a press message).
Mrs. Drummey, one of Alexandra's oldest pioneers, and an aunt of Dr. Chappie, M.P. for Stirlingshire in the British House of Commons, died on Thursday night, after some weeks' illness. Mrs. Drummey is survived by her husband and one daughter.
A Press Association message from Mastorton states that an old identity of that town, m the person ,of Thomas Wilton, senr., died yesterday at the age ?l T'x.. arrived-in Wellington in the forties m the ship Oriental
