The Star. Delivered every evening by 5 o'clock in Hawera. Manaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltham, Mangatoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, Opunake, Otakeho. Manutahi, Alton, Hurleyville, Patea, Waverley. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12, 1914. THE PATRIOTIC FUND.

We cordially associate ourselves with the spirit and the action of the public meeting held here on Tuesday night, under the presidency of the Mayor, to promote the creation of a patriotic fund on behalf of "the Dominion's Expeditionary Force, and especially its Hawera section. The meeting had, as was inevitable, real heart in it, and the various speakers showed that here, as elsewhere throughout the Empire, the vital nature of the crisis is clearly realised. The real ultimate objective of Germany is a deadly blow, not only te the present national pre-eminence of the British race, but to those principles of freedom and civil justice, which are repugnant to that country's dominant military caste. It is to help in defeatJflg thess diabolical designs that Hawera joins in with other parts of the' Dominion in providing an Expeditionary Force and in helping to provide for it. Our joung men have volunteered for active service with a spirit worthy of the greatest days of our race, and last night's meeting, and all the executive efforts in harmony with it, are proofs that those who must perforce remain behind will also worthily make fitting contributions to the realisation of the grand resuli-^4h"a ffialtitehancd of the' national integrity of Britain and her allies, and of those principles of justice and freedom which are at stake in the present crisis.
