HAWERA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

DISCUSSES DIFFERENT MATTERS. A special meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday afternoon to deal with several -matters arising out of the war. Mr E. Dixon (the president) occupied the ! chair. j The president said it would be very ! convenient if at the present time the Hawera telephone exchange were open- | ed at 7 o'clock in the morning instead of at eight o'clock, and also if arrange- i ments could be made to have it opened all day on Sundays. He had inter- I ! viewed the Postmaster, who suggested i that he should get the Chamber to ' write officially to him making tbp re- i quest. He had since written to the j < Postmaster, as president of the Cham- ; her, and he hoped the Department would grant the concessions asked for, ; which would be a great convenience to i the subscribers. f On the motion of Messrs Webster and Dufnll, the president's action was* s confirmed. ! The president brought under the notice of the members tho fact that he ! i had received ..several complaints with 3 reference to the undue increases in the price of foodstuffs, chiefly in regard to i flour. i It was pointed out that the advance was caused through the merchants, but i i another member emphatically declared s i that it was absolutely unnecessary to i ' put up the prices of foodstuffs locally J produced. c It was remarked that the Premier had introduced a Bill to regulate the prices of foodstuffs, and it was decided to allow the matter to stand over in the meantime. , It was decided that Mr Sellar shoi^d ' address the volunteer troops on Thurs- ' J day, on behalf of the Chamber before ' their departure. There was a good * deal of comment on the circumstance ; J! that the contingent that left on Mon- ' day had been allowed to depart- with- ! * out some words from the citizens. | r Members commended .the action of ;*' the Government with regard to the pre- : * sent crisis, and Mr Bone moved that i the Premier be written to expressing * the Chamber's appreciation of the G<.v- " ernment's action in placing the country's resources, in men and horses, at ■ * the disposal of the Imperial Govern- jjl ment. I l This was seconded by Mr ODea, and I carried unanimously. j r
