THE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE.

Recollections of the South African war are stirred by the yigorbtla preparations being made for tha despatch of an expeditionary force to assist the Imperial arms abroad, wherever the Home authorities may direct. As in the case of the former war, Taranaki in general, and Hawera in particular) las not been slow to supply volufct&ers. It has been eßjs&cialty gratifying to see that wnen the Territorials were given the chaase, a large majority of those availaM'a at once stepped out of tiae raiik^ in token of offering their services. Indeed, this has been so general all ccrer the Dominion that the targe number of men volunteering who are not in the Territorials, and a large proportion of whom have liad training or seen active service, wall have great difficulty in securing places in the force. There is, therefore, no doubt that, if the need continues, another force of equal strength coufff easily be secured./ There is clear indication of this in the action of those Hawera citizens who have convened a meeting for Thursday to consider the formation of a Mounted Corps, wliose services will "be placed at the disposal of the Government for use wherever *required. This proposal is likely to commend itself strongly to all who have the qualifications necessary for membership, aud especially to those who have seen active service ot -who have had experience in the Mounted Forces. There is not likely to be smy lack of volunteers, and there is ho dmibt that Hawera will show, as in the past, that she can rise to a great occasion. Then there are other ways to assist, such as with money and the gift of suitable horses, In regard to which much spontaneous generosity has already been shown throughout the Dominion. In this connection, too, Hawera is rising to the occasion, and it is very gratifying to be able to chronicle such a splendid response to the appeal on behalf of King and country, especially as the aid thus given promises to be of real practical assitance to the Motherland and her allies at this Titanic crisis in the world's history.
