SALVATION ARMY'S LOSS

WELLINGTON, May 31

The national headquarters of the Salvation Army at Wellington received a cablegram from the international headquarters, London, stating that over 100 -officers and soldiers had been lost. The officers who perished include Commissioner and Mrs Rees (Canadian commanders), Colonel and Mrs Maidment (Canadian chief secretary)," Brigadier Scott-Potter, Major and Mrs Findlay, Major and Mrs • Creighton, Mrs Major Simcoe, and thirty other officers; also the Canadian Staff Band, and Brigadier,, and Mrs Hunter, who were on furlough in Canada from India.

References were made to the disaster in all the churches to-day.

At the Methodist Church, Hawera, on Sunday reference was made to the loss of the steamer Empress of Ireland, and sympathy expressed with the Salvation Army in the loss of members through the disaster. Suitable hymns were also sung.
