FROZEN SPARROWS.
During the coldest of the recent New York nights, when the thermometer hovered about zero, it was noticeable that many of the electric light signs on Broadway were partly blotted out. The illumination seemed to extinguish itself and then come back flutteringly for a time. In the day time workmen climbed on the roofs, where the si^ns rest, but could discover nothing "wrong, but at night they again fluttered and flickered. Several workmen were then sent to investigate at night, and they found the phenomenon had been caused by hundreds of sparrows. The cold had almost frozen them, and the birds had discovered the warmth of the electric light globes and bad huddled round them. Their bodies blotted out the lights, their occasional movements caused the mysterious flicker ings.
