MILK PRODUCTION IN CANADA.

A large arid excellently got up bulletin.on "Milk Production in Canada/ has been compiled by Mr J. H. Gris- | dale, B.Se.,' tbe director of the Do- ' minion Experimental Farms. Not onlyare the different breeds of dairy cattle , and their special points described, but information is given as to their man- , agemeiit and feeding, including the ! growing of suitable crops, and instruc- ; tion is also given as to the treatment of the different common cattle diseases. There are a variety of breeds of cattle in the Dominion of Canada, the list dealt with in alphabetical order being: Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Devon, Dutch Belted, French Canadian, General Pui-pose, Guernsey, Holstein-Frie-san, Jersey. Lincoln Red, Red Poll, Shorthorn, and Sussex. Of the breeds not known in New Zealand, the Dutch Belted are only used to a very limited extent in Canada, and are described as more ornamental than useful, the results of centuries of upbuilding having left the breed far from satisfactory from a dairyman's point of view. The French Canadians are a email breed,, but hardy, and as milk producers they resemble the Jersey, but in quantity and quality they fall somewhat behind that breed. Au average of 65,0001b of milk of a little over 4 per ce^it. test is about the usual standard. They were' supposed to have been introduced from Normanby or Brittany with the early French settlers in the 17th oentuTy. The Brown Swis« came originally from Switzerland, and were first impor+pd into America in 1869. They are fairly largei animals and come under the hend-

ins of gen eraL purpose cattle, together ■VrMi-thft P«>votis, Lincoln B^ I*, Hed Polls. Shorthorns and Sussex. Th<vLircoln Reds are not a recognised breed in Canada, and the Sussex have not

been bred to any extent. Tho Jersey. TTolstain-Fricwau, and Ayrshire, and TTvrvnMv r,""t^i"iii are the popular dairy breeds in Canada.
