Thkne was a very pleasing function at ike ihouse of 2M rs 'Wells on Thursday last. , When the residents knew that ilrafct Hacly was going to leave the district, the members of the Tennis Chib gave her a surprise party, in which more than thirty people took part. The evening was devoted to cards, songs, and games, which were kept going until 1 o'clock. During the evening Mr A. J. Gibbs (the president of the club) presented Mrs "Wells with a handso.ne sugar howl from the ladies of the district, to show tlie esteem in whidh they held her, and ho hoped that it would remind her of tbo friends that she left at Alton. Mrs Wells suitably acknowledged the graceful gift. The first of n scries of euchre parties •n-as held in the hall on Wednesday, a fair number beincs present and probably there would have, been a larger attend-j anee but fiv other attractions in the adjoiving distrirte. The chairman of" the Hall Co^niitteo has presented a number of valuable trophies for the vinnero throughout the. winter. The' successful Tjlayers on Wednesday were! Mr A.. Hnrlcre and Mrs A. J. Gibbs. . !
