Under the auspices of the above society (writes a correspondent) the wellknowu temperance orator, Mr C. H. Poole gave a vigorousc and inspiriting address in Wesley Hall on Thursday atternoon. Mrs Blamires was in the chair, and 'the attendance was good, visitors being present as well as members. Mr Poele has recently returned from a workPs tour with an accumulation of data of much interest to the prohibition ranks. He narrated how io England, he had met with Dr. Saleeby, a man who is devoting his brain power to the physical elevation of humanity, studying most closely the habits and vices that must be eliminated 1.0 prevent race deterioration. He occupies the same position towards mankind that Luther Burbank does towards plant life. Dr. Saleebys verdict after a close study of alcohol and its results is that "it is a. poison to the race." This decision was confirmed by Sir Victor Horsley, who has also studied the subject deeply, in a temperance address he gave iv the Free Trade Hall, Manchester. Paassing to America the speaker dwelt on the intense way the women are working there for the franchise. He saw "the most splendid eighi of his life" in a. procession of 20,000 'welldressed women with banners flying, and many bands in attendance1, pass j through New York to ask for the vote. In -one of the States where the franchise was already granted to women, 1000 saloons had since been closed, 400 were closed in another. Mr Poole gave statistics telling of the wholesale closinig of lunatic asylums and penetentnries in several of the counties of Kansas, there being none to fill them. A most telling appeal to motherhood was given in conclusion. The audience was reminded that drunkards of the future are the children of to-day. Whose would they be? Mr Poole was listened to with attention throughoirb, and a warm vote of thanks was accorded him.
