DEFENCE QUESTION.

PEACE SOCIETY AND SIR JOSEPH WARD.

BT TEUSGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION,

CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. A large deputation of the National Peace Council waited on Sir Joseph Ward and placed before him objections to the Defence Act and their reasons. Sir Joseph Ward, in reply, said the scheme was not conscription, as its operations were limited. He agreed with them with regard to having peace, but it must not be forgotten there was danger. He would not give away confidences, but in the past there had been a possibility of a raid on New Zealand.
