GISBORNE, March 5. The W.C.T.U. Congress opened this mornnig. The presidential address delivered by Mrs Don, Dunedin, referred to the growth of membership and the activity of the organisation. It dealt with, many topical subjects—the rage for amusements and pleasure—and showed that the increasing tendency for week-end trips would threaten to beoome a serious menace to the sanctity .^of the Lord's Day. Referring to picture shows 2 she urged that a responsible body be created in New Zealand to supervise films. Many of the pictures now being shown were creating an unwholesome appetite and leading to wholesale moral decrepitude. ' The State should make provision for the detention of mental defectives. It was
appalling to think that an abnormal number of girls, who should be under <|Testraint, are the mothers of children. ;One case was brought under her noV tice last year. A defective was the mother of eight children, now supported by the State. She urged that the conference continue its endeavor to eradicate the gambling evil.
