ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The Engineer reported as follows: —

GENERAL

Main South. Road.—A start has now _>een made with the re-metalling authorised at the 5 mile peg (Burkes -«reek), Whenuakura Gorge, and between Waverley and Moumahaki. In Jill these places the old metal is completely worn through and the road itself so much out of shape as to require reforming. In these cases I considered it advisable to proceed with the laying of the metal, as should the wet weather come on before the remetalling was carried out, the road would probably cut up very badly, and it then might be impossible to lay the metal before next summer.

:PAXEIA WEST. Maintenance.—A good' deal of repair has been earned out on Ball -road during the month, more particularly ajround Hurleyville, where the metal has been backed up and sidetracks improved. Ball Road Loan.—Very good progress lias been made with this work during the three weeks since your last meeting, tne two top sections now being completed, and a _tart made with the metalling of the length between Alton <Joorge and the station. Given fine "weather the whole of the metal should .le laid by the end of March. The distance metalled since your last meeting is 33. chains all being in the top section.

PATEA EAST

The work of repairing the Main road _has now been completed. A distance of jabout four chains has been metalled ■on Little Taranaki road, being in one «f the cuttings near the cheese factory.

MATAIMOANA DISTRICT.

Aharoa Road. —I have now six men •employed in repairing this road, the majority of whom are settlers. The eet--tlers have also appointed one of themselves to assist me with the supervision, which arrangement is working satisfactorily. . Mataimoana Road.—A narrow point on this road has now been widened, and the road is in fair order as far as used by the coach. Further repairs beyond this point I hope to have effected 4shortly. [The balance of the report referred to the Waitotara end of the county.]
