MRS THOMAS GOOD
Auother ; of the .pioneers of the'Do-mimpn;-.paßsedL peacefully to rest on Christmas Day hi. the person of Mrs GodoT,:fe^ct'.pf'the late Captain Good, at the ag- of 84 years. Mrs Good was a| daughter of Mr Thomas Gates, of Hampshire, England, and came to Taranaki-about sixty-two years ago. With hor husband she went through all the trials- and hardships incident to the life of the pioneer settler. When,. in the time of the war,, the order was given to Taranaki women to leave and go to Nelson, Mrs Good was one of those who refused to go, and she stayed to share all the dangers of those stirring times.. The late. Captain Good commanded successively a Native contingent and a company of Rangers. He * was in charge of the troops at Tataraimaka and afterwards at Urenui. About 1872 he settled at Oeo with his family. Their homestead was one of the best known on the coast. About ten years ago,they left Oeo and settled in Hawera, acquiring the property known as Dive's at Ramanui. Mrs Good was a woman of tremendous courage and great force of character. Though she had an attack a week or two ago which caused her family anxiety, she recovered well. On Christmas Day she-was well and cheerful, but in the evening had another attack, and the end came suddenly. Mrs Good leaves a family of nine, five daughters and four sons (Harry, Hugh, William and Alan). The funeral left the house this morning, Messrs J. H. Baker, H. Graves, A. W. Webster, R. W. Foreman, R. McLean, A. J. Young, Hooper and Kimbell acting as bearers. The interment took place at Te Henui, New Plymouth, to-day.
