ENGLISH LAND QUESTION

SPEECH BY MR LLOYD GEORGE

OX CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION— COPYBIGHT. LONDON, Dec. 23. Mr Lloyd George, speaking at Pwelhett, repudiated the idea that his land programme is merely a vote-catching-device. For every 20s paid by the farmer in wages, continued Mr Lloyd George, he paid over 25s as rent. He wanted fair play for all, but the landlord was no more essential to agriculture than a chain to a watch, and the Government's plan was to place the parasitic interest last. The Tory alternative was taxpayers' money for the landlords to build cottages to keep the tenants under their thumbs. Referring to immigration, Mr Lloyd George said that the lifeblood of the country districts is being gradually drained and poured into the veins of new lands overseas, where laborers are better treated.
