A message from I^ondon says that the Daily Chronicle reports that Mr Sydney Buxton will retire from the position of President. of the Board of Trade and will be succeeded by Mr 0. F. G. Masterman, M.P.

. Mr A. M. Samuel, of Lower Hutt, nephew of the Hon. Oliver Samuel, announces his intention of contesting the Hutt seat at the next general election.

Mr J.. Strauchon, Under-Secretary for Lands, who retires on March 31, has had a long and honorable career in the New Zealand Public Service, h:i~:ng entered the Provincial Engineers' Department of Ota-eo when he was fourteen years of age. It was as long ago as 1865 that Mr Strauchon joined the Lands and Survey Department, and for many years he was district surveyor for Mataura. Be siiccessively held the positions of Commissioner of Crown Lands for Westland, Taranaki and Wellington, and in 1907 succeeded Mr T. Humphries as Surveyor-General. Mr Hfrauchon's place ias Under-Secretary of the Department is to be filled by Mr James Mackenzie, at present Surveyor-i'rene-ral. Mr Mackenzie is also a ?ery old sei-vant. having graduated- from the old Otago Provincial Survey Department. He has been Commissioner of Crown Lands in Taranaki, Auckland, and Wellington.
