CHRISTCHURCH CUSTOMS CASES
' '-BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 23. Mr Bailey, S.M., presided when the hearing of the Customs frauds cases was resumed after being postponed, caused by a protest against one of the Justices on Saturday. /Ernest Wood, a clerk, employed by J.; M. Heywood and Co., and' John ..-Hill, tide surveyor, were charged with the theft of £49 11s, the property of W. Brittenden-and Son. The evidence, was' to the effect that the firm had placed the clearing of four cases of dutiable tailors' goods in the hands of Heywood and Co., and Wood falsified the entries and debit notes, while Hill passed the invoice and prime entry. A cheque for £99 16e paid by Brittenden did not reach the Customs in full. Accused reserved their defence, and were committed for trial.
Wood and Hill were also charged with having stolen £67 7s, the property of the same firm.- The.evidence in this case presented similar features to the previous one, Wood having collected j£l2B 14s from the firm* and paid £61 y« io the Customs. Accused were committed For trial.
