Delivered every evening by 5 o'clock in Hawera, Manaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltham, Mangatoki, Kaponga. Awatuna, Opunake, Otakeho, Manutahi, Alton, Hurleyville. Patea. Waverley. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1913. END OF THE STRIKE.

We are glad to be able to publish today the news that the disastrous, strike has at last come to an end officially. The seamen in New Zealand have resumed work under a fresh agreement under Jthe Arbitration Act, and the embargo in Australia has been lifted. The ports are thus all open once more, and transport is free. It is extremely satisfactory that this result has been achieved before Christmas. It will tend to greatly brighten an outlook which hitherto has been anything but pleasant. The losses caused by the strike have still to be paid. The loss of wages by the workers, the loss of profit by many employers will be felt for some time to come; the cost to the public revenue has to be made up. However, if the result—demonstrating, on one hand, the power of the forces of law and order and business men's solidarity, and, on the other, the futility of the strike as a method of coercion—be to free the Dominion from similar troubles for a long time to come, the loss will not have been incurred altogether in vain.
