■ At a meeting on 28th. October the London County Qouricil viewed with grave concern the increase in the loans for paving work. The loans sanctioned have been: - 1912-13 ... ... £103,638 191L12 ... £40,808 Present financialyear up to date. ... £214,909 • The policy of the Road Board; it was said, induced borough, councils to incur Jieavy loam for paving,. and the Finance Committee were communicating with, the board on the .subject. The -committee deplored that there was no Authority (outside the city) which could exercise any control over the routes used by heavy motor traffic. v > Mr, H. H.: Gordon said he:, was not opposed to heavy motor traffic, but while the traffic could use any streets they liked the local authorities were under the necessity of making practically every read capable of bearing the Maximum amount of traffic. This was a. position they ought not to be in. He quoted a case in whichj because a motor-omnibus company selected a certain route, the borough council had to put a new foundation under the road at: enormous cost. The work was scarcely completed when the omnibus company changed its route and began cutting up a parallel road. Such a state of affairs was an invasion of the rights of the community, and should' not be tolerated. • . ■■'■ Sir John Benn said motor-buses had' rendered a great service, but ' Jhe'l thought the rest of London should do what the city had done, and say which roads the 'buses should not use. He urged that the council should promote legislation on the lines of the findings «f the committee on motor traffic.
