Colonel Wolfe, inspector of rifle ranges and drill halls, proceeded to Wellington this morning, after paying an official visit to Taranaki.
Dr. T. H. Valintine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, who had been on a brief visit to faranaki, was a passenger for Wellington to^-day. Captain Stevens and Mrs Stevens, who have been residing at New Plymouth for a few months, seeking a y change of air, have returned to' Hawera.
Mr Burgess, the newly-appointed manager of the Bank of New Zealand, has arrived in Hawera. Mr Rairie will probably leave for Wanganui towards the end of this week. _The death is announced of Lord NaPier, Ettrick, who has had a distinguished career in the British diplomatic service. James Carroll, who claimed to be 123 years of age, has died in the Rockwood Benevolent Asylum, New. South Wales. He arrived in Australia 65 years ago. Rev. Mr Davies, curate in Hawera parish residing at Normanby, has1 passed a further theological examination, and is to be ordained to the priesthood shortly. Mr A. H. Bryson, formerly of the Indian Civil Service, died in 'Adelaide a tew days ago, H£ was in Lucknow when it was besieged by rebels at the time of the mutiny. His father, who was in charge of the defences of ttife city, was shot, dead during the assaults.
_ According to the Dunsdin correspondent of the Wellington Post, the opinion is .stestdily gaining ground that the two nesv Judges will be found to be Mr J H. Hosking, of Dxmedin, and iJT. Sftntond. of Wellington.
