SUBSTITUTE FOR PETROL.

Last month it was cabled out that an important announcement had been made in England by the Petrol Substitutes Joint Committee to the effect that a valuable > discovery had been made whereby forty million gallons of motor fuel could be produced annually in England. From particulars now to hand it appears that the new discovery, of which very meagre particulars have been allowed to leak out —refers to a new process for treating one of the. heavy series of by-products from coal. The actual spirit obtained is of a light yellowish, color, and is of the benzole classification. It contains all the constituents of a highly efficient motor spirit, and is quite as good, if not a trifle better, than ordinary benzole in combustion. The mileage obtainable from the new spirit is very good, whilst an increase of 15 per cent in power is obtainable. It is anticipated that the new fuel can be produced so as to sell in England at about "a shilling a gallon.
