WESTPORT HARBOR BOARD ENQUIRY.

BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. At the Westport Harbor enquiry, Mr R. McKenzie said that neither an official of the harbor nor of the Land Board had power to create a reserve. The yards dealt with by the Government at Waimangaroa, Ngatiawa, and Seddonville were not necessary, and too much money had been spent on the railway stations. Mr Harry Hawthorn, officer in charge of the pay, revenue, and imprest branches, said that the amount standing to the credit of the Westport Harbor Board was at present £18,983. That was the balance on March 31. The first deposit was £8152. made in the 1905-6 financial year. He did not think an account in regard to the £145,000 had been kept. Mr P. R. Webb (audit department) stated that the Harbor Board was astonished when the late. Mr Seddon made the £145.000 a debt recoverable from the board. There lind been no law to compel harbor boards to keep their accounts in any particular way In regard to the £200,000 loan the payments made, unless there was authority, were clearly wrong payment"; in view of the decision of the full court.
