THE FIREBELL

To the Editor

Sir, —For years Hawera has experienceu consiuerable uiinculty in so arranging tne hrebell tnat it inuy be lieuru in every quarter of the town, and it Has always been my belief that tne greatest coutriDuoory causes are: (1) jueing locked in by surrounding bmldings.and (2) the fact that it stands on an incline, which means that the sound is taken away, instead of up to the town. The idea has struck me on so many occasions that 1 would like to draw tne attention of those interested in what may prove a better condition. My idea is tnat if a bell were suspended from a frame on the top of me water-tower, there sliouid be no difficulty in hearing it all over the town, it may be otherwise, but it is perhaps an mea that wiil bear investigation, as the bell is not yet quite satisfactory.
