Mr G. H. Barker, manager of the abattoirs, was appointed inspector of butchers' shops by the Hawera Borough Council on Wednesday evening. An Adelaide cablegram announces the death of Sir J. Duncan, leader of the Liberal party in the Legislative Council. At Wednesday night's meeting of the Hawera Borough Council O. H. K. Whittington was appointed actingMayor during the absence of Mr A. W. Giilies from Hawera. Mr W. F. Mackie, father of Mr Chas. Mackie, of Patea, died t.fc. Sandon Block, Mangamako, on Wednesday morning. The deceased was oho of the oldest settlers in the district having resided on the farm for some 23 years. He is survived by a daughter and two sons. Mrs Craig of Sandon Block, and Messrs Daniel Mackie, of Rongotea, and Chas. Mackie, of Patea. Mr James Stevenson, who. is at present science master at the: District High School at Wellington, New South Wales, has been selected from nine applicants for the position of assistantinstructor in agriculture under the Wellington Board of Education. Mr Stevenson was trained at the Sydney Training College, and gained a scholarship which took him through the Hawkesbury Agricultural College. He is to be employed principally among the smaller schools in the Wellington district.
