THE FLEET.

SYDNEY, Oct. 7. The citizens were to-day afforded an opportunity of viewing the personnel of the newly-arrived fleet, 500 strong; including contingents from two x British warships, followed by 700 members of the Naval Reserve and Senior Naval Cadets. They assembled at Government House grounds, and marched with bayonefted rifles on their shoulders through the principal streets. They presented a brave show. A big and enthusiastic gathering lined the route. Senator Millen, commenting on the Defence Conference cablegram, said that, presuming the information was officially confirmed, it would provide for deep regret. It would be unwise to say more at present, except to add that it would be important to know the reasons for the decision.
