The New Zealand Loan and .Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Hawera branch, reports :—
On Friday, August 29, we held a sale of dairy stock on account of Mr N. A. Brown, Ngaere. The cows were a good lot and included a number of pedigree Ayrshires. There was a fairly large attendance, and good competition throughout, and most of the cows sold well, high prices being obtained. Pedigree Ayrshire cows brought from 16£ to 26gns, others from llgns to lojgns. Ayrshire calves (just dropped), 1 to ljgns; ordinary dairy cows (good quality), £17 to £24. ss; others, £8 10s to £15 10s; later calvers, £5 5s to £9 ss; 2-year heifers in calf (poor). £5 5s to £6 10s; unbroken half draughts, £11 to £16 15s: draught filly, £30 10s. At Opuuake on Monday, September 1, we had a moderate yarding of store and dairy cattle. Practically everything was sold at prices about on a par with late quotations. Fat cows, £6 6s to £7; fresh conditioned cows. £5 10s to £5 "16s; forward cows, £4 10s to £5; store cows. £3 10s to £4 ss; 2-year steers, £5; dairy cows, £7 2s 6d to £9 ss; 3-year springing heifers, £6 10s to £9: 2-year ditto, £5 5s to £6 ss; 2-year empty heifers, £3 5s to £3 14s 6d; colored yearling heifers, £3 3s to £3 10s 6d; yearling' steers (good) ,£2 16s to £3 3s; yearling Shorthorn heifers, £2 0s 6d to £2 19s sd; mixed yearlings, small, £1 7s 6d to £1 18s.
On September 2 we held a clearing dairy sale on account of Mr Arthur Foy, Lake road, Hawera. There was a good attendance and we had a successful sale. The cows were a good I.»t, but a number were rather on the old side. The well-known cow "Biddy" brought £47. A yearling heifer and a heifer calf, the progeny of "Biddy," brought £10 and £4 15s respectively. Best dairy cows brought from £12 5s to £14 10s; others', £8 5s to £11 15s: backward and old cows, £3 to £6 10s: milk-cart horse, £35; yearling heifers. £4 Is: breeding sows, £5 17s 6d to £6 10s; maiden sows, £2 10s to £3: porkers, £1 19s: store pigs, £1 7s.
At Manaia on the same day we had a fair yarding and a good sale. Springing dairy heifers (good). £7 to £8' 15s: others. £4 5s to £5 15s; dairy cows (poor). £5 15s to £6 10s; fresh conditioned cows. £5 10s to £6 4s: forward cows, £4 10s to £4 18s; store cows, £3 8s to £4 2s 6d; yearling heifers (good), £3 to £3 5s Gd: others. "£1 16s to £2 12s: yearling itepr*, £2 7s 6d to £2 19s sd; mixed hoggets,' 13s 6d; porkers. 37s 6d; store pigs, 32T7 weaner pigs, 10s to 15s.
