OTAKEHO.

rpaOil G.a OWN CORRESPONDENT.] 'At the-present-time Otakeho is experiencing a period of sociability, and is living at a rate calculated to make the residents of the cities" of the' Dominion stand aghast and shrink from. the whirl of excitement. Dances have been frequent, the most successful of which was that arranged by the school committee to obtain funds for the making of a tennis court in the school grounds, and which was held last Friday night. The door takings were, I believe, a record, and is proof of the people's enthusiasm in this movement. Messrs Putt and Mackie acted as M.Cs in a manner which won the hearty approval of all present^ I have the authority ef the committee to tender to Mrs Birchall and Mr R. Claque their warmest thanks and keen appreciation for providing the music on that occasion and also to the ladies who so generously provided the supper. Another of the Hall Society's euchre parties was held on Tuesday-evening, the prizes being secured by Mrs Aitken and Mr S.. McNeill. The passing of the warship ' created quite'a stir here, and a large crowd journeyed to the beach at different points to witness the searchlight display, and were not disappointed, as at eleven o'clock the spectacle was magnificent, and those who waited were amply rewarded for braving the fierce wind that was blowing. Maoris have assembled from all parts i of the district and are holding a meet--ing at the residence of Mr John Pini, Taikatu road. I hear that the local people who journeyed to Wanganui on the occaI sidn of the visit of the warship were disappointed both with the arrangements, made (or which were not made), and also at not getting on board. Weather conditions have been rather pleasant since last writing, as it has been very mild, calm, and- fine, nnd there are people who are complaining , of their tanks getting low, which is unusual at this period of the year. Clearing sales are becoming the order of the day again, and there is goi ing to be the usual migration of settlers to other parts. r
