THE SEARCHLIGHT DISPLAY.

A very hi rye number of people took advantage of the beautiful night on Monday to walk to the zigzag to see the searchlight display from the warship as she passed along <iff the coast. The light was first wsiblo about 8.30 o'clock' aui towards nine o'clock it became mom brilliant, but half an hour later it seemed to disappear altogether. It re-ap. peared again at 10 o'clock, and at 10 30 o clock tlioso who had' remained at the abattoirs and at the Zigzag were rowarded with a brilliant display. The searchlight rays and, flashes were visible from Regent-street and other neighboring streets in Hawera. The Borough Council had a beacon light burning at the Zigzag, making quite a respectable display.

Although the senior cadets from Hawora at first appeared likely to lose their trip to see the New Zealand yesterday morning, they were afterwards taken on by a later train, and in the upshot were-more fortunate than mos+. as they were, it is stated, the crly ones—as a- body—from this district■ to be taken out on a tender for a nearer view of the warship. This ja-iviln^ was obtained for them through th'o good offices of Captain Stevens.
