IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
AUSTRALIA'S NAVY.
I ADMIRAL KING HALL'S VIEWS.
« CABLE- PBEBS ASSOCIATION—rOPYBIGHI (Received April 24J- 9.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 24., Admiral King Hall, speaking at a meeting of the Royal Society of St. George, congratulated Australia on the progress of her navy. Men entering it had proved, full' of zeal, amenable to discipline and proud of the service, and there was no iack of entries. Avoiding politics, the Admiral said, he would venture a few remarks. It was most improbable that we would be able to keep a vast country unless it were effectively occupied. Every man and woman should study world politics to some extent and not live in the narrow circle of the parish pump, nor ever allow the.navy to be the shuttlecock of political parties, but study the naval question. J*O? do people here exist? he asked. Merchandise to the value of £240,000,000 yearly was carried by ships, which must in war time be sure and safe for carriage, otherwise your trade stops, and you cannot live by taking in each other's washing.
