CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

[FEOM OtTR OWN CORRESPONVJKNT.] The .quarterly meeting of the Eltham •Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday night, with Mr Parrott (president) in the chair. Those present were: Messrs T. B. Crump, H. W. Bovis, E. C. Goldstone, J. McVeagh, H.. G. Carman, L. Hill, G. D. Gow, H. Rochfort, G. H. Buckeridge, and 0. E. Flyger. In the absence of .the secretary (Mr Weir) Mr Buckeridge acted as secretary. Mr Parrott said that this was the first quarterly meeting, and the Council had met regularly. One good thing the Chamber had done was to have die ElMiam railway station raised a grade. A\other matter they had dealt with was the "Land Agents' Bill, " in connection with which they Kad made several recommendations which had been embodied in the Bill. Mr Carman brought up the question of the Water Polhition Bill now before the House, and said that it seemed to contain dangerous provisions and the Chamber should take some action .n i.ke matter. Mr Gow moved that the matter be brought- before the Borough Council on Friday night. Mr McVeagh said the matter was urgent, and he thought the member for the district should be telegraphed to. Mr Crump suggested that the matter should be brought before the Borough Council at its meeting on Friday. It was resolved to do this. Mr Crump brought up the question of wakmo an effort to increase the nut'ber of subscribers to the telephone, so that the hours when the exchange was open might be extended, and moved iti that direction.—Seconded arid car rie J Mr Carman moved that the railway staticnmaster's office be connected with the telephone exchange. At present only the goods shed was connected, and it was very inconvenient not to have the railway office on the telephone. — Carried. Mr Parrott moved that it be a recommendation to the Council to have a deputy-official assignee appointed for Eltham. Mr McVeagh seconded and strongly supported the motion. Mr Crump opposed the motion, on the ground that it was unnecessary. The motion was lost. Mr Crump brought up the matter of the facilities available in Eltham for. the travelling public to get to Dawson's Falls, Mountain House. He thought it might be made more public, that ample facilities were available in Eltham. He moved that it be a recommendation to the Council to bring the facilities more prominently before the public. Mr Hill seconded the motion, which was carried. The unsighty condition of the south end of the railway' yards was brought up by Mr Bovis, who suggested that something should be done to put it in a more attractive condition, by having it cleaned up and planted; and he raov<xl accordingly.—The motion was carried.
