£Bx Telegraphs-Special to Stab.J WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. The Public Petitions Committee has recommended for favorable consideration the petition of a number of Gisborne residents that the great services renamed by Mrs Lee (nee Miss Mary Collins), and commonly called the "Taranaki heroine," should be recognised by the Government in some material way.

A petition was presented to the House by Mr iVlacDonald this afternoon on behalf of the widow of the late Major William Gilbert Mair, asking that, out cf consideration for the exceptional and highly meritorious services rendered to the colony by her late husband, she .should be afforded such relief and assistance as the House may deem just and advisable.
