MOUNT LYELL DISASTER.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S CONTRIBUTION.
KEEPING THE STAFF TOGETHER
DEBATE IN THE TASMANIAN
PARLIAMENT
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT. (Received Oct. 24, 12.55 p.m.) ADELAIDE, Oct. 24. The Government will give £500 to the Mount Lyell relief fund. HOBART, Oct. 24. The Mount Lyell Company will keep certain smelters going, and will construct a tram to the Comstock property, chiefly with the object of affording relief to the men rendered idle by the disaster and keeping the staff together till the men are again working.
In the Assembly the leader of the Opposition moved a motion deploring that the Government had not insisted on precautions being taken which would have prevented a terrible loss of life at Mount Lyell. He stated that he took action because the mine was to be flooded and would have withheld the motion had he thought a coroner's enquiry would be held. The Government accepted the motion as one of want of confidence, and the debate chiefly turned on the question of providing a second outlet from the mine. It was shown that the mining regulations did not provide for this, excepting in the case of collieries.
The debate was adjourned
