MANAGER OF RAILWAYS
IMPORTED EXPERTS.
[By Telegraph— Special to Star.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 23. > In answer to a question by Mr, R. VV. Smith, the Minister for Railways ma ; de the following statement this after- ? noon. The High Commissioner has been/* instructed to invite applications in the ; United Kingdom for the position of general manager of railways. Should applications be received bj the High ; Commissioner from countries outside Great Britain, they will be forwarded to the Government for consideration J.t is intended to confer the appoint- * m-ent on the most suitable applicant who must, however, have had practical railway experience. This answer was commented on by a number of members, some of whom thought that the appointment should ' be given to someone already on the railway staff, even if he had to be sent ' Home for a year or so to study conditions and gain experience. There was a captious touch in a good deal of the criticisms.
In his reply Mr Herriea, the Minister for Ranways, said that the Department seemed to be the Cinderella of the House, as it was always getting hanged about. He did not prorjose to deal with the matter until the Railway Classification Bill was under discussion, possibly at the end of the week.
