OTAKEHO.

(From Our Own Correspondent;.;

What ntight have proved a serious ;.accident befell Messrs F. Jackson and L. Mudford on Thursday mprning last, whilst, driving to Opunake in a spring icart. Whilst descending the Oeo hill and approaching the bridge, the backl»H"d broke, and the occupants were thrown out —luckily clear of the vehicle, —and apart from a severe shaking, they ■* escaped unhurt. Both shafts were broken off the cart, but the horse esCaped unhurt. This is the second accident that has occurred here (the first one fatally), which should be somewhat •of a warning to people to guard against ■ accident through defective and weak harness. Mr F. Dorn has installed an engine and all the machinery required by a wheelwright with an ever-growing business. Mr T. Dill, lately of Manaia, has now taken over the butcher business here, and we hope that he will prove as good . a citizen as his predecessor. At the last meeting of the Otakeho Hall Committee held recently, the affairs of the society were shown to be in a most satisfactory state, so much •so as to warrant the carrying out of 'certain necessary improvements. Mr Jackson was authorised to prepare a report relative to the cost of installing electric light in the hall, and to report • afc tho next meeting. The new hall secretary is proving himself very energetic, and with new life in the committee^ this should be a year of progress. The weather here during the " past three weeks has been deMghtful— tine •days with showers in the • evening. Grass is becoming somewhat plentiful, which is the farmer's one delight, the quantity of milk is daily on the increase, and altogether the farmers have cause to regard the future ■through rose-colored glasses. Local anglers report good sport to 1)9 had here, one having secured 12 nice h.sh recently, making his total for two • days 18, which is.encouraging to others •to pursue this sport more devotedly.
