MODERN SURGERY.

BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, Aug. 1.

An operation has been performed on Oscar Neilson's heart, whereby 86 feet of gold wire was wrapped round the aorta and electricity sent through the wire. This reduced the swelling sufficiently to allow the heart to perform it* functions. No anaesthetic was used, an incision being made between the fifth and sixth ribs and sprayed with cocaine. Dr Lusy is satisfied, a-s he did not expect to cure the patient .entirely, biit thought he might prolong life. This is the second operation of this character performed in the United States, the previous one being on Henry Griffen, who was operated on five months ago, and is now thoroughly well. Neilsen is showing: improvement.
