SPORTING.

(By SIR SINGLE.)

Locally trained horses engaged in the three principal events at the coming 'C.J.C. Grand National meeting are Compass (Grand National Steeplechase), Darby Paul (National Hurdles, and "Ngatiruanui, Con the Shaugraun, ■Smilax and Patriotic (Winter Cup). The three first named were recently taken to Wanganui by their trainer, P. Coffey, who wanted something to go with his jumpers in their schooling tasks, which, owing to tnere being no jumpers at work in Hawera at the present time, he could not get here. Reports from Wanganui state that the trio mentioned are doing all that is asked of them on the tracks there. Trainer J. Brown is hard at work upon Smilax and the 6bligado gelding i» being kept well into the collar on the Hawera tracks. All going right meanwhile, he will go to Christchurch in due course. Con the Shaugraun is pleasing the track watchers at Hawera, and recently ran as good a five furlongs on the ■sasd track as has been seen here for . some time. There is plenty of the Coronet gelding and the winter scale of weights should suit him better than it will some he will have to meet. In the Winter Cup he has been weighted at 9.7, half a stone above the minimum, which will permit of & man in the saddle, and with the going to his liking the son of Coronet should not disgrace ■this province if started in the race referred to. T. Pine, his mentor, is also working Grattan, a full brother to Can the Shaugraun, and a filly by St. dements, which is, I understand, own- ||- ed by one of the Taranaki members of Parliament. The remaining Winter Cup candidate from Hawera is Patriotic, who since racing at the Taranaki Autumn meeting, was added to the list and spelled. T. F. Goddard has only had the son of Patronus up again since for about a couple of months, but as he is bowling -along well in his work he is apparently -one of the sort that come to hand quickly. In all probability, he will be seen out at the coming Wellington meeting, as may also most of the others previously mentioned. St. Toney is on the easy list. Bismark broke down a few days ago, and in consequence J. Fryer has abandoned his intention of visiting Trentham with the Uhlan gelding and St. Serf. The last mentioned is standing all right and Fryer is ~~~n*6peful that the firing to which the son of St. Paul was subjected during the summer for hock troubles has effected a permanent cure. Dr Ring, of Auckland, visited Hawera recently and operated on the hurdle horse Silva for a wind affection. J. Fryer brought Park Tide in again this week after a short spell in the paddock during which, however, she was fed regularly. O. Cox's team are doing well, though none of them claim engagements in the «ear future. At Marton, or some of the earlier spring meetings, however, Sam Pan, Royal Marine and Princess *lo will probably sport silk. The deformed joint with which Recipe is blemished has caused his trainer some trouble though the Stepniak gelding actually broke down on it su^' Cox is hopeful of yet getting more races-out.ot the speedy little fellow, "whom he describes as one of the best constitutioned horses he has ever had through his hands.. J. Fryer tells me that Allure has made a good recovery from the. operation performed on him for wind troubles and in all probability the Handsome Jack gelding and his full-sister Handsome Maid will rejoin Fryer's team later on. Mr S. Pitt of Stratford has leased Master Tupuhi from Mr Anstis, and AY Mantle, Mr Pitt's private trainer nonlias charge of the Tupuhi gelding^ who judging from past performances will wm more races with good placing. The A r.R.C. committee has endorsed the sentence of twelve months' disqualification recently imposed by the V.A.T.C. stewards upon the New Zealand jockey, H. Cairns. It is said that Mr J. B. Joel is . paying F. Wootton £2000 and a win- „ mng percentage for second claim on hie - -services this season. B. Deeley, the leading New Zealand horseman, received a cablegram from R. J. Mason asking him to proceed at ' once to Randwick, and therefore took . passage by Friday's steamer from AVel- ' lington. Deeley's total of winning mounts for the present season is 88 which, though a remarkably fine total' is still one off C. Jenkins's best record for a season.
