[Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a naturalised British subject. In 1876 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, and in 1879 an academician. He was especially celebrated for his -pictures of ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian life, which were painted with great realism and archaeological cor-'-"""rectness. He was a Litt.D. (Dublin) and D.C.L. (Durham), and was born at —-Dronryp, Netherlands, in 1836.]
