He was an Antrim man, born on July 6, 1835, entered the Army in 1853 and served in "India with the 27th Inniskillings during ■fche Mutiny. As Major in the Gordon J-lighlanders (of which he afterwards became Colonel), he served with conspicuous distinction in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and afterwards in Burmah and Kgypt. His world-wide fame, however, •came with his splendid defence of Ladysmith in the South African war —a defence which lasted from November 2, 3899. till March 1, 1900, and won him a i-enown akin to that gained by Sir John Moore with the memorable retreat from Corunna.]
