WAIMATE I. (3) v. KAPONGA I. (0).

This match was played on Victoria Park, Kaponga. It was a good game, though the Waimate players apparently realisced they could hold their own without exerting themselves. Manaia backs were always there when wanted, and did some nice passing on occasions. The only score during the game was effected by Waimate at the opening of the first spell, Young, at the end of a series of neat passes along Kaponga's goal line, securing and scoring. Prince's kick was, ineffective. An attempt at the goal from the field a little later also failed. The remainder of the first spell play was confined to mid-field. Winters early in the second spell, set up a nice forward dribbling rusr on the part of Kaponga, but a too vigorous kick took the ball over the dead ball line. Later a similar attempt should have been a sure score, but was badly bungled. Some interchange of line kicks followed. Then Manaia attacked and right on Kaponga's line, several attempts to get through on their part were with difficulty averted, the ball finally going out of play. Play again was in mid-field iill the last ten minutes, when Waimate made a vigorous attack. Kaponga broke away in several fine forward rushes, instituted by Kissick and Buire, but in each case the Manaia backs were too sure in their defence and there was no result. There was no further score.

For Kaponga, Nicholls throughout played his usual good game. The Paterson brothers were well to the fore, and M. Malone, as full-back, was very cool in his returns and was a tower of strength in defence. It is a great pity the. team cannot have his services oftener.

The Waimate team all played a good game. Their backs gave a good display, but Kaponga showed sound defence. Mr A. Neilson was referee and gave satisfaction.
