THE WATER TOWER.

♦ SUGGESTIONS APPROVED. Mr J. C. Cameron, Borough Engineer, reported to the General Committee of the Borough Council as follows: —"I interviewed Messrs Hugo and Robieson respectively in regard to proposed water tower, and submitted plan of same, and was asked by them to alter the system somewhat, and that instead of having 100,000 gallons of water storage in two tanks at different levels, that the amount mentioned be stored in one tank, giving .a static pressure of not less than 601bs. per square inch, which .would be entirely satisfactory to them. They approved of the scheme of utilising the bath water as a secondary reserve, to be pumped into tank, rather than into mains. They also approved of the lOinch main being carried up High street to Victoria street from the water tower. I have sketched out another plan of tower. The alterations will need a good deal of strengthening of reinforcement in concrete and by cutting out the inner cylinder of concrete I can keep the expense at about my former estimate, but I find on 'enquiry that centrifugal pumps of ordinary pattern will not satisfactorily lift the water to the height that is wanted, viz., 150 feet, so that I will need to increase mv estimate by £200. Writing under June S, Mr Dobson, C.E., said: "Since receiving your telegram re reinforced concrete, I have soen to-day several representative .samples of what has already been done in this way, and I send you a rough sketch of what I think would be very suitable. The stand pipe would contain 150,000 gallons, which would keep the domestic supply going. The elevated tower will contain 40,000 gallons, or a. greater quantity if required. A struc- | of this sort would have to be very carefully designed. I could not give more than a guess as to the cost. Of course it would cost very considerably more than a light steel eonstrution;' on the other hand, if properly designed and limit, it would be practically everlasting." Mr T. Hugo, Inspector of Fire Brigades, also wrote approving of the scheme submitted by the engineer for a water tower for fire prevention purposes.
