A CHEMIST'S DISCOVERY.

Perkin, of .Manchester, has announced the discovery •of a synthetic rubber which can be manufactured on a commercial scale at a cost of half a crown a pound, which may be reduced to a shilling. Fusel •il is produced from the starch in maize, and then converted into isoprene; from which the rubber is extracted fey contact with sodium.
