THE NEW HEBRIDES.
(Received June 18, 11.30 a.m.)
MELBOURNE, June 18. ! Complaints continue to be received from Presbyterian sources concerning the condominium in the New Hebrides. It h stated that recruiting is practised with impunity, that the sale of intoxicants is increasing, and that punishments for offences against the pur noses of the, condominium are insufficiently severe. The Federal Government has promised to make representations to Britain regarding either buying out the French interests or securing predominance by an exchange of territory. THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILWAY.
Work on the Transcontinental Railway has been suspended. The Commonwealth claims not only all the land required for the railway, but also all catchment areas, and South Australia insists on adherence to the water catchments already given, unless the State railway engineer certifies that more are reasonably required for transcontinental purposes.
